OFL & Colour of Poverty Symposium January 16 & 17, 2009 |
|
Written by Randy Banderob
|
|
Tuesday, 09 December 2008 |
How can the labour movement and racialized communities come together to help end poverty? The time has come to make the connection. Poverty is colour coded. Between 1980 and 2000 in Toronto, the poverty rate for the non-racialized population fell by 28%, but poverty among racialized families rose by 361%. Even after 20 years, immigrants are more than twice as likely as someone born in Canada to have a low income. Working full-time all year, women of colour earn only 64% and Aboriginal women an appalling 46% as much as men. One in four First Nations children lives in poverty. These are the facts of poverty.
The Ontario Federation of Labour and the Colour of Poverty Campaign are sponsoring a Symposium on Friday & Saturday, January 16 & 17, 2009 to understand the link between race and poverty and implement a concrete proactive plan of action to address this issue.
The Symposium will provide a forum to increase and broaden understanding around this issue and address the negative impact on employment, income levels, education and learning, health and well-being, justice and policing, immigration and settlement, housing and homelessness in Ontario. It is also time for labour to look at how we strategize to unionize and support racialized communities in order to reduce poverty levels and develop a plan of action that will advocate for appropriate systemic solutions regionally and globally.
If you are interested in attending this conference, contact the District 14 office. To learn more about the conference, read more. |

|
Local Teacher / Occasional Teacher Bargaining Unit Presidents attended a meeting in Toronto on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 to review the details of the recently negotiated provincial framework agreement. Local leadership strongly endorsed the provincial framework agreement . It must be stressed that the framework provides the basis for local collective agreements; it does not replace them.
Highlights of the framework include:
- Deadline for ratified local agreements is January 20, 2009;
- Four year term of agreement – September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2012
- 3% increase for salary, wages and allowances generally accepted as pensionable earnings on September 1, 2008; September 1, 2009; September 1, 2010; September 1, 2011;
- Funding for benefit improvements;
- Improvements for Continuing Education Teachers;
- Improvements for Occasional Teachers;
- Additional staffing to address local priorities;
- Negotiate local issues in good faith;
Your local bargaining team will utilize a more detailed analysis of the framework agreement to effectively negotiate local priorities.
Also, a Tripartite Advisory Committee appointed by the Minister (with representation from the Ministry, Teacher Federations and School Board Associations) will be struck to address the issues raised specifically during the Provincial Discussion Table process.
