Provincial Discussion Table Update |
Written by Randy Banderob
Monday, 24 November 2008 |
OSSTF/FEESO teachers/occasional teachers received correspondence from the Provincial Executive dated October 28, 2008, regarding negotiations. Included in the correspondence was a recommendation by the Provincial Executive to enter into discussions with the Ontario government and school board representatives to establish a provincial framework agreement that would assist teacher/occasional teacher bargaining units to achieve collective agreements that address local priorities. The membership overwhelmingly supported the Provincial Executive's recommendation in a provincial vote held from November 3 to November 13. Discussions commenced Monday, November 17 and were scheduled to conclude Wednesday, November 19. Negotiations of this magnitude involving three parties (OSSTF/FEESO, the Ontario government and school board representatives) are extremely complex. After three days and nights of hard bargaining, a fourth day (Thursday) was added for the parties to continue negotiations. Negotiations recessed late Thursday afternoon and have been scheduled to resume Wednesday, November 26 and continue on Thursday, November 27, if necessary. |

Global Day of Action on Climate Change, December 7, 2008 |
Written by Randy Banderob

Tuesday, 18 November 2008 |
On Sunday December 7, 2008, join people across the country and take to the streets to support the global day of action to stop global warming. We will be marching with others around the world to demand that the United Nations climate change conference in Poznan, Poland (December 1-12) support deep greenhouse gas reductions. In Canada, the Harper government has failed to act on global warming and has blocked progress at previous climate meetings. The Canadian government must take a stand against global warming at home and abroad. We demand that the government increase support for renewable energy, energy efficiency and green jobs. OSSTF supports OCT survey |

Friday, 14 November 2008 |
Over the past year, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities brought together stakeholders for a Teacher Preparation Roundtable. This group met discussed issues related to teacher supply/demand and the recommendations made by the College of Teachers regarding teacher preparation programs in Ontario. The College of Teachers has recommended that pre-service programs be lengthened to ten months (or equivalent), be comprised of 6 rather than 5 courses, and that some adjustments to the content of the program be made including having professional education identify special education as a required component and adjusting the definition of programs of professional education so that it includes, as an area of study within the program, Education in Ontario. To thoroughly investigate this possibility, the Ministry of Education will be surveying teachers trained at certain faculties. OSSTF believes that the survey will provide valuable data to the Ministry of Education and the stakeholders with respect to Ontario teacher preparation programs and therefore has no objection to members filling in and submitting the survey. The researchers will be in touch with teachers trained at OISE, Brock, Trent, and Université Laurentienne to begin implementing the study this month. Some will be contacted as early as next week. School board staff will assist with the implementation of the study by sending out invitations to participate. OSSTF is satisfied that the confidentiality of the respondents is absolutely assured and that their responses can not in any way be connected with them for evaluation purposes by administration. |

Wednesday, 12 November 2008 |
As we approach the December 6th National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, OSSTF/FEESO again encourages our districts, bargaining units, Status of Women Committees, and individual members to take part in school, workplace, union and community events marking this day. This year, for the first time, the bilingual OSSTF/FEESO poster commemorating December 6th is being included as an insert in the October issue of Update. This insert also contains information on the Red Rose and White Ribbon symbols, a candlelighting ceremony, and web resources. Leading up to December 6th we strongly encourage you to work with your district Status of Women Officer and Committee to circulate this material as well as provide information about local events, initiatives and resources that may be available to your members. Your commitment to commemorating December 6th and to supporting ongoing efforts to address issues of gender-based violence and harassment is greatly appreciated. Through these efforts, the members of OSSTF/FEESO can and do make a difference. For more information, contact Marg McPhail at the provincial office. |

CLC calls for boycott of Petro Canada |
Written by Randy Banderob

Wednesday, 12 November 2008 |
The Canadian Labour Congress is calling for a boycott of Petro Canada in support of the 260 locked out workers from the Communications Energy and Paper Workers of Canada. The workers are part of the CEP local 175 at the Montreal Petro Canada refinery and have been locked out sing November 17, 2007. Aside from locking out these workers, Petro Canada continues to use scab labour in violation of Quebec’s labout laws. Petro Canada has earned over $9 billion in profits over the past five years and relies heavily on the loyalty of Canadians and on the prestige of its maple leaf logo. The Canadian Labour Congress now asks Canadians to stand up for the rights of the refinery’s workers and boycott the company until the conflict can be resolved. |
